Color Blinded

February 10, 2014

Whether it was at grandma’s house, behind the choir loft, or even in your own living room- most of us have probably seen the “classic” image of Jesus kneeling in prayer while looking up to heaven, all the while bathed in a beam of light.  I know that it’s been a meaningful image for many and I’m not trying to take away from that, but there are times when it strikes me as a bit ridiculous.  After all, Jesus was a Middle Eastern Jew- why are so many Western portrayals of him so…white?

Perhaps it’s harmless carelessness (or ignorance) on the part of the artists, but my fear is that it points to a deeper theological problem.  Do we as Christians- self-proclaimed “followers of Christ”- try to look more like Jesus or do we try to make Jesus look more like us?

I’ll let you chew on that as you see fit.  Feel free to leave a comment if you’d like.  Either way, thanks for looking!
