It’s ridiculous that this is still a thing.
I’ve long said that if I could find a traditional Worship service where I wouldn’t be ostracized for showing up in jeans and a t-shirt I’d be golden. Contemporary Worship- when done well- can be great, but my favorite part of such services is actually the relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, for some reason many churches still adhere to the notion that if you don’t come dressed up then you’re not “giving God your best.” According to that line of thinking, my worth in God’s eyes is determined by how impressive other people find me.
It’s a shame there’s not a scripture passage that debunks that whole idea. Oh wait, there is:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” -1 Samuel 16:7b (NIV)
I promise, it’s a whole lot easier for me to wholeheartedly sing, “It Is Well With My Soul” when I’m not being strangled by a tie.
Thanks for looking, and God bless all of you who’ve decided that wearing flip-flops doesn’t block God from
being able to use me effectively.
