“Is anybody really paying attention?”
Every pastor asks that question from time to time. Some of it probably comes from the self-doubt that most (if not all) people feel, but a lot of it comes from the I-can’t-believe-that-just-happened moments that regularly occur in ministry settings. Case in point: the time one of my congregations hosted a guest preacher and afterwards multiple persons shook my hand and complimented me on the sermon I had preached.
And don’t get me started on how often faithful church-goers quote popular sayings and attribute them to the Bible. Yoda’s pretty awesome, but he’s no Jesus.
Not all pastors are good preachers or teachers, but most do their best to present messages worth hearing. Do your pastor (and yourself) a favor and pay attention to what God is trying to communicate through him or her. If nothing else, hopefully you’ll save yourself the embarrassment of attributing the wisdom of a dilapidated puppet to your Lord and Savior.
