Have you failed yet?

Lent 2015 is still fairly young, but chances are good that if you gave something up your resolve has already been tested. Maybe you resisted like a champ…or maybe you slipped up during a moment of weakness. Attempting to live sacrificially during Lent means that every day is a test; sometimes we pass…and sometimes we fail. Such potential for failure on a daily basis can easily discourage us and even tempt us to give up completely, essentially turning Lent into a joyless and disheartening struggle.

But what if we look at Lent differently? What if we choose to see each day as a new opportunity to seek God wholeheartedly and to be reminded that God loves us in the midst of our failures?

Some days we will stay strong and succeed in living sacrificially, and on those days we can thank God for that evidence of spiritual growth in our lives. Other days we may give into our weakness, slipping and falling down under the weight of our own shortcomings and being reminded yet again of just how much we need God’s grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Regardless of our success or failure, Lent presents us with the daily opportunity to celebrate God’s relentless, overwhelming, unconditional love for us- beautifully and horrifically before us in the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8, NIV)

Keep your chin up, fellow sinners. We may now dwell in the midst of death, but Resurrection is coming.
