Won't You Be My "Neighbor?"

“We’ve all probably heard Matthew 22:34-40 quoted many times and we like to pretend that we understand it and have a handle on it, but what happens when our “neighbor” isn’t someone we want to love?”

I created this comic to accompany a sermon entitled, “It IS You (It’s Also Me)” that I’ll preach this Sunday at Good Samaritan UMC in Lake Wylie and again on Monday at Wesley. The quote above contains one of the operative questions from that sermon. Sure, Jesus’ command to “love our neighbor” seems easy enough when we’re surrounded by people we want and/or find easy to love (i.e.: people who look a lot like us), but what happens when that’s not the case? How do the differences- the “otherness”- we see in many of our “neighbors” affect how we treat them?

“If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:46-48)

May God forgive us for allowing our fears to prevent us from living out God’s love. Amen.
